about

In 2014, I started a song that I'd been thinking about for a minute and while the idea was brewing, I thought about how I could feature my friend Devin, who'd been wanting to play guitar for me on a song for all of the years we'd known each other. While developing the song, I'd show Darrin the progress, who suggested early that we use his grandpa's Spanish acoustic, but we'd have to get it restrung.

So we told Devin, obviously he was down, and we took the guitar to Rockley off Colfax and had it restrung which took a few days. Me or Darrin didn't go back to pick it up for months. lmao. They held it for us though, and we finally got it, and picked up Dev immediately afterwards. It was a Saturday, I believe, and Dev was already boozin. lol. But we drove off, he took the guitar and I attempted to show him the song (which he hadn't heard yet) but before I could even explain to him what he was listening to, he was already in the backseat, pluckin away.

And it was magic, y'all. We called Jose and ran to his basement to record. He played the whole ride there, and the whole time I set up.

One take. For a few minutes. Faded. Hella faded. lmao. But he didn't need to be sober. He played from the inside somewhere that doesn't exist inside most of us. And he'd only stop when I was buggin him about all the stupid shit that Devin was the last person I had to tell. lol. When he finished the first take though, as if he'd let it all out, he stopped playing and asked how it was.

Tbh, I was grateful to have just captured at least a portion of what he did that day. The next day, we got together again to listen, laughed at how he hardly remembered, awed at his talent, and he had a few parts he wanted to fix.

And we had every intention of re-recording that song, especially after I lost the original recording files, and he always asked me about it. But I procrastinated those following weeks, and then months, and come 2015 found myself focusing more on my design business over music and it was one of those things that I thought we'd most certainly, absolutely, definitely get to eventually.

Well, as my favorite CCR song teaches us, "someday never comes." And before you know it, you can lose a friend and never have those opportunities again. But instead of living in regret of my own shortcomings, I want to honor the memory of my amazingly talented friend Devin by letting everyone else hear the small piece of him we captured that day.

The song is called "A Song You Always Hoped For", the instrumental was produced by my dude Oliver Johnson, and this is the raw, listen-amongst-ourselves mix that we exported the moment we all left that day, in hopes of learning it well enough to play live.

Devin starts playing around 3:48 and plays the duration. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

RIP Homeboy! I miss you, my dawg.
